NYT Op-Docs Acquires Oppenheimer Short for December Release With MUBI

New York Times Op-Docs has acquired The Revolution Against Death, a short film directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, as reported by Deadline on 13 October 2026.
Op-Docs, the Times's strand for short documentaries, will put the film out around the world in early December together with MUBI, the curated cinema streaming service. It is a joint global release. No ticket prices or exact date were disclosed.
The setting is unusual. The film was shot at an annual longevity conference called the Revolution Against Aging and Death Festival. MUBI describes it as a short film about technology, self-deception and the dream of immortality under the Californian sun, according to MUBI.
The film started on the festival circuit. It premiered at the Tampere Film Festival in Finland and later screened at the Telluride Film Festival. It is now lined up for the Chicago International Film Festival and for IDFA in Amsterdam, the international documentary festival.
Oppenheimer is a two-time Oscar nominee. He directed The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. He made his fiction debut in 2024 with The End, starring Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon and George MacKay.
Behind the release, Alexandra Garcia is executive producer of the Op-Docs series and Yvonne Ashley Kouadjo is producer. The filmmaking credits listed by MUBI include cinematography by Svetlana Cvetko, editing by Niels Pagh Andersen, and producers Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sørensen.
For viewers, this means a short festival run followed by wide online access. After Chicago and Amsterdam, the film will be available through the Times and MUBI in early December.
