Todd Haynes has described “De Noche,” his romantic noir drama starring Pedro Pascal, at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, Variety. Noir here means a crime story with a dark, romantic edge. It is his next feature, and the Lyon talk was its most detailed public outing so far.

Pascal plays a detective. Danny Ramirez plays a younger schoolteacher. Their characters flee the corruption of 1930s Los Angeles for Mexico, Variety. Haynes also named Anna Terrazas, the Mexican costume designer, as part of the film’s creative team.

Filming finished in April 2026 and no release date has been announced, Yahoo. The shoot is done. A date is next. Haynes told the Lyon audience the film will “most likely be an R-rated film,” Variety, a US rating that generally requires viewers under 17 to be with an adult.

Haynes attended Lyon with producer Christine Vachon, his long-time producing partner, for a four-film retrospective: “Poison,” “Safe,” “Far From Heaven” and “I’m Not There,” Variety. The programme included newly restored versions of “Poison” and “Safe.” He had been announced in advance to introduce those restorations in person, Festival Lumière.

The 2026 4K restoration of “Poison” — a cleaned-up, ultra-sharp rebuild of the film — was carried out by Studio TF1 at the Éclair Classics laboratory, approved by Haynes and produced with support from Chanel, Festival Lumière. The 4K restoration of “Safe” was carried out by Sony Pictures Entertainment, supervised by Haynes and also produced with support from Chanel, Festival Lumière. Restorations of this kind repair damage and refresh colour and sound for modern screens.

Haynes joined Zhang Ziyi and Daniel Brühl to lead the festival’s star-studded opening, with Tsui Hark and Fatih Akin also present, Variety. He is listed as a guest of honour for the 2026 edition, Festival Lumière. The festival runs through Oct. 18.

For fans, this means the picture is now about post-production and planning. The story is set. The cast is known. The calendar slot is the part still to come.
