September Inflation Is Expected to Speed Up to 3.6%: What It Means for Rates and the Fed

September inflation data lands at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, and forecasters expect prices to have sped up again. Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal expected a 0.6% monthly gain, up from 0.4% in August, for a 12-month reading of 3.6%. Inflation here means how fast consumer prices are rising. Wall Street Journal The release timing is listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Trading desks expected the same yearly result. Traders saw September headline CPI, the government's main price gauge, up 3.6% from a year earlier, versus 3.4% in August, according to CNBC. That is an acceleration on both the monthly and annual measures.
Hard assets were softer heading into the report. Comex gold settled 0.31% lower at $4152.90 ahead of the U.S. CPI data, while Comex silver settled 1.63% lower at $59.161. Wall Street Journal That left both metals lower into the data rather than priced for an upside surprise.
The data run is packed. September CPI was set for Wednesday in the week of Oct. 12-16, 2026, with retail sales and PPI, or producer prices, set for a day after September CPI. Investing.com Retail sales measures shopper spending. The October 2026 CPI is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.
Yields were already moving higher, which matters for savers and borrowers. A Treasury yield is the annual return for lending to the U.S. government, and higher yields tend to push up borrowing costs and make stocks less appealing next to bonds. Wall Street closed lower on Oct. 7, 2026 as long-dated Treasury yields resumed their climb. Reuters In early September, yields hit their highest since 2023 and the S&P 500 fell 0.58%. The S&P 500 was still up 11% in 2026 at the time of that drop. Reuters
July is the recent guide to CPI-day moves. U.S. stocks finished mixed and government bond yields edged lower after July inflation showed consumer prices up 3.4%. Wall Street Journal For the period around the July 29, 2026 meeting, Fed minutes state Treasury yields rose 25 to 30 basis points on higher real rates. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point. Real rates mean borrowing costs after inflation. Federal Reserve
The policy dates come quickly after the data. The FOMC, the Fed committee that sets short-term rates, met Sept. 15-16, 2026, and the Fed released minutes of that meeting on Oct. 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The next meeting after September would be Oct. 27-28, 2026, the minutes state. Federal Reserve The Fed also scheduled the December meeting for Dec. 8-9, 2026. Federal Reserve BofA Global Research expected three 0.25-point rate increases in 2026, starting in September. BofA Private Bank
The broader context here is the mix behind the yield rise. A fall in bond prices led by real rates, rather than breakevens, or the market's inflation outlook, still tightens financial conditions through longer loan terms and stock valuations without signaling that inflation expectations slipped. That split matters for Oct. 27-28. A 0.6% monthly CPI with 3.6% year over year keeps price momentum high into PPI and retail sales the next day, giving policymakers paired signals on price pressure and demand strength.
In my view, the setup into Oct. 14 points to rates doing most of the work. The September stretch showed stocks can keep a double-digit year-to-date gain and still react when the long end jumps. Fading gold and silver before the print point to light hedging for a hot number and more focus on the real-rate path. If September confirms the surveyed pickup, the debate moves from whether cooling stalled to how the Fed writes the October statement and guides for December, with three meetings left in the year-end sequence.
