David Silva is playing football again.

The 40-year-old former Manchester City midfielder has joined Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin. He will play only one league match, The Guardian reported on 14 October.

It is a short-term deal. Sha Tin were promoted to Hong Kong's top flight last season. Silva's appearance will come in the league proper, not in a friendly or exhibition game.

Silva, who is Spanish, has been out of the game for more than three years. He retired after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, the central stabilising ligament in the knee, during pre-season training with Real Sociedad. The injury ended his playing career at that point.

City supporters will remember the rest of the story well. Silva spent a decade at Manchester City. A midfielder is the link between defence and attack, the player asked to keep the ball moving and open up space, and Silva did it with rare calm. He left England with four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups.

After leaving City he spent three seasons in San Sebastian with Real Sociedad. For Spain he earned 125 caps, which means 125 senior international appearances. He was part of the squad that won the 2010 World Cup.

What makes this stand out is its brevity. One match. That is it. No long contract. No talk of a full season or a longer comeback.

For fans, this means something simple and rare. Sha Tin are new to this level, finding their feet in the top division. Now their supporters get ninety minutes with a player who shaped title races in England and major tournaments with Spain. It gives strangers in the same stand something to feel together.

He was never the loudest player on the pitch. His game was about timing, weight of pass and finding a pocket of space. It will be fascinating to see how much of that touch remains after three years away.

One game does not rewrite a career. It does not need to. For Sha Tin, it is a night to remember. For everyone else, it is a chance to watch a great of the modern game say hello one more time.
