A Mexican painter who imagined escapes into the sky has her first solo exhibition in Europe.

Sofía Bassi: Floating Between Earth and Sky is presented by Pippy Houldsworth Gallery and described by the gallery as the first European solo exhibition of Mexican Surrealist painter Sofía Bassi Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. It runs from 9 October to 14 November 2026 and is staged in the gallery's Main Space Pippy Houldsworth Gallery.

The show centres on paintings from the 1960s. They include Escape (1968), an oil on canvas Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, and Cazando Estrellas (1967) Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. Surrealism, in simple terms, is art that mixes dream imagery with everyday life.

Bassi's market remains small but active. Her paintings have realised auction prices of up to US$46,105, and her works on paper up to US$15,000 MutualArt. Artprice lists 238 auction results for the artist, and ranked her 8379th on its world list of best-selling artists at auction by 2025 turnover Artprice.

For wider context, Bassi worked in a milieu shaped by better-known figures. The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington states that Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo both painted primarily in a Surrealist style infused with mysticism and otherworldly elements National Museum of Women in the Arts. Interest in that circle continues. Sotheby's promoted Carrington's Sueño (Nephesh as the Soul in a State of Sleep) as part of its Modern Evening sale, while Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco has presented rare works by Carrington and Varo at ADAA The Art Show.

What makes this stand out for visitors is scale and access. A single-artist show lets you follow one person's imagery across several works. Here that means floating bodies, skies and star-chasing titles, seen together for the first time on this side of the Atlantic.
