China beat Britain to team sprint gold at track worlds in Shanghai

China beat Great Britain to gold in the women's team sprint at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai on 14 October. Britain took silver.
The result came on the opening day of the championships, with the hosts winning the first major showdown of the week, BBC Sport confirmed.
The team sprint is track cycling's short, all-out dash. Two teams start on opposite sides of the velodrome, the steep-banked oval track, and race the clock over three laps. Riders peel off one by one. Just speed.
The 2026 Tissot UCI Track World Championships run from 14 to 18 October on Chongming Island in Shanghai, according to the UCI. It is the first time China has staged the event. A home gold on day one gave the crowd exactly what it wanted.
China arrived as the team to beat. They finished top of the women's team sprint rankings during the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Cup, the UCI reported. Britain had to topple the form team. They could not quite do it.
There is much more to come in Shanghai. Italy's Martina Alzini, Vittoria Guazzini and Martina Fidanza are back to defend the women's team pursuit title they won in Santiago, the UCI reported. The team pursuit is the long team chase, four riders working together to set the fastest time over four kilometres.
Friday 16 October brings a packed programme, according to Team GB. The women's sprint final takes place that day. That is the one-on-one duel, part speed, part cat and mouse over three laps.
The women's omnium final is also scheduled for Friday. The omnium is an endurance test across four bunch races in one day, decided on points. On the men's side, Friday holds the points race final, a long bunch race with points for sprints along the way, plus the time trial, a solo dash against the clock, and the individual pursuit, where two riders chase each other from opposite sides of the track.
For fans, this means Britain are off the mark. Silver on day one is a solid start. The hosts struck first.
