Rockstar hit Miami clubs to build GTA VI nightlife

Every patron in a GTA VI nightclub moves to their own routine.
That is the opening detail from 'The Making of Grand Theft Auto VI', a Bloomberg feature published on 14 October 2026 that goes inside Rockstar Games and how it built the sequel's nightlife. The game's fictional Vice City is based on the real city of Miami, and the studio travelled there repeatedly to study how the city looks, sounds and moves after dark Bloomberg.
The research was hands-on. Developers rode in helicopters to take aerial photographs to guide streets, rooftops and sightlines. They also joined police officers on ride-alongs, sitting alongside officers on patrol to watch how they work.
Artist Aaron Garbut told Bloomberg that the team visited trendy nightclubs and mingled with dancers as part of the same effort GameSpot. Multiple trips to Miami fed the work, with days spent watching rooms fill, empty and change tempo. The aim was small behaviour, not just big architecture.
Inside the game, that shows up in three ways. Each club patron has distinct animations and scripts, meaning their movements and the instructions that drive them are not simply copied and pasted. The bar serves its own list of unique drinks. The lighting systems work in sync with the music being played, shifting colour and pattern with the beat.
Garbut contrasted that with standard practice elsewhere. Designing a club for a typical video game, he said, might mean generating a few nonplayable characters in different-coloured shirts. A nonplayable character is a figure controlled by the game itself, rather than by the player.
The feature also sketches the company behind the game. Rockstar Games operates a dozen offices around the world. Jennifer Kolbe is its head of publishing, the side of the business that handles release plans and distribution. Rockstar North, one of its studios, is located in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a three-floor building that formerly served as headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper.
What makes this stand out is the link between nights out and systems. Observation on dancefloors and patrols becomes crowd movement, drink lists and light shows that react to sound.
For players, this means the club is built to be watched as well as walked through. Pick a spot near the bar. Watch the room. No two dancers will do quite the same thing.
