BlackRock at $15.5 Trillion: Why the Starting Point Changes the Story

BlackRock reported $15.5 trillion in assets under management at September 30, 2026, in materials published October 14, 2026. Earnings supplement Assets under management, or AUM, is the total market value a firm manages for clients.
The precise figure was $15.49 trillion, up 15% from a year earlier and a record. Yahoo Finance A 15% rise on a base above $13 trillion adds more than $2 trillion in twelve months.
BlackRock had reported $15.34 trillion for the second quarter of 2026. Reuters That implies growth of roughly $150 billion quarter on quarter, against roughly $2.03 trillion year on year. The comparison a year ago was $13.46 trillion for the quarter ended September 30, 2025. Reuters
The longer run was $12.53 trillion in second-quarter 2025, $11.48 trillion in third-quarter 2024, $9.10 trillion in third-quarter 2023, and $7.96 trillion in third-quarter 2022, down 16% year on year. Reuters From that 2022 figure to September 2026, stated AUM added about $7.5 trillion.
The broader context here is what the starting number does to the percentage. A 15% increase on $13.46 trillion sounds calm, yet it moves far more money than a larger percentage on an $8 trillion base. For fees, cash planning and risk, the dollar move matters more than the rate.
In my view, the path from 2022 to 2026 warns against reading AUM as new client money alone. Stated AUM is a stock, like a photo on one date. It rolls together client inflows and outflows, market price moves, currency shifts, and deal additions or sales. Without that split, the headline cannot separate true demand from market lift. That split drives revenue quality and staying power.
Looking at what this means for modeling, two habits help. Keep the quarterly and yearly changes apart. The quarterly change shows the latest step. The yearly change shows the cycle. And watch dollars with percentages. Above $15 trillion, even single-digit percentages mean trillion-dollar totals for savers, counterparties and markets.
