Dateline Canada to Premiere Nov. 26 on Citytv With Diana Swain

NBC newsmagazine Dateline is getting its first overseas edition. Dateline Canada will premiere Nov. 26 on Citytv and Citytv+, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series is the first international expansion of the Dateline franchise.
Veteran journalist Diana Swain will host the Canadian programme. Swain is a former senior investigative correspondent for CBC News and former host of The Investigators on CBC News Network. She left CBC in 2024 after 33 years with the broadcaster. Her appointment puts a long-serving investigative reporter at the front of the new edition.
The series was made as part of a licensing deal with Rogers Studios, meaning Rogers has the rights to produce a local edition of the NBC format for Canadian audiences. A spin-off, in TV terms, is a new series built from an existing title. Here it keeps the Dateline name but adds a separate team and a separate case list.
Longtime Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison will appear in Toronto to promote the launch. The organised appearance connects the original show to its new sibling in person. The U.S. Dateline is anchored by Lester Holt and features correspondents Andrea Canning, Josh Mankiewicz, Morrison and Dennis Murphy, according to Rogers. That line-up was set out by Rogers in a 2022 Citytv announcement.
Dateline Canada will open with a two-hour special. The premiere revisits the wrongful conviction of Robert Baltovich for the murder of Elizabeth Bain. A wrongful conviction, in plain terms, means a person was found guilty of a crime they did not commit.
Baltovich spent nine years in prison until 2000. He was acquitted in 2008 after prosecutors dropped all charges. An acquittal means the court clears the person, and in this case it followed years of legal challenge.
For viewers, this means the familiar Dateline title with local reporting and local cases. Swain leads. Morrison's Toronto visit provides the visible link between the two editions.
What makes this stand out is the opening choice. A two-hour slot gives room to lay out arrest, trial and appeal in order. It sets an early test for a series built around detailed case retelling.
