Inde Navarrette turned a US$750,000 horror-romance into a worldwide gross of more than US$514 million and a role in Marvel's next X-Men film.

Navarrette, who stars as Nikki Freeman in Curry Barker's Obsession, traced that run on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, in an episode published on Oct. 14, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The recording was made in front of 500 students at Chapman University. She discussed Obsession, fame, a possible sequel and playing Rogue.

Her screen credits before Obsession included Denton's Death Date in 2019, 13 Reasons Why in 2020 and Superman & Lois from 2021 to 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Obsession then had its midnight premiere on Sept. 5, 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Made independently for US$750,000, it sold to Focus Features for US$14 million after a bidding war between buyers, as reported by the trade.

Focus Features released the film on May 15, 2026 in 2,615 theatres in North America, the United States and Canada. It grossed US$17 million in North America in its opening weekend. It has since grossed more than US$514 million worldwide, as reported on Oct. 14. The numbers tell the story. The film also holds a 94 percent tally on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore, an exit-poll grade from opening-night audiences.

The awards run is now taking shape. Navarrette will campaign in the Best Actress category at the Oscars for Obsession, a horror-romance built around a central love story with horror elements, according to Variety. Variety reported the campaign plan on Sept. 2.

Next comes Marvel. Navarrette will play Rogue in Marvel's reboot of X-Men, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The studio has dated that reboot for May 5, 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a separate interview published by Just Jared on Oct. 3, she said she promises to bring Rogue "justice." She is also attached to star in The Waffle House Index for Apple, as reported on Sept. 3.

Chapman University lists a Sept. 18 Master Class with Navarrette built around a screening of Obsession followed by an interview at the Marion Knott Studios Folino Theatre.

What makes this stand out is the chain. A midnight festival slot led to a trade sale, a wide North American release and, five months later, an awards podcast in a university theatre. For fans, this means the sequel talk and the 2028 date are the next markers to watch.
