iPhone Duo Repair Costs Explained: Why the Folding Screen Costs $999 to Fix

Apple has published estimated repair pricing for the iPhone Duo ahead of its October 23 release, with the phone starting at $1,999.
Without AppleCare Plus, Apple's paid repair plan, the highest prices are $999 for inner display damage and $1,499 for other damage The Verge. The inner display alone costs half the price of a new base phone. Other damage costs close to three-quarters of that base price.
Other prices without coverage are lower and listed separately. Cover layer damage is $49, back glass damage is $199, rear camera damage is $229, and battery service is $229. Outer display damage is $379, while combined outer display and back glass damage is $509.
With AppleCare Plus, those prices are lower. Battery service is $0, inner display repair is $99, and other accidental damage is $99 The Verge. AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year, or $399 flat.
Apple's support documentation lists more prices with coverage. Cover layer repair is $19, front display damage is $29, and back glass damage is $29 with AppleCare Plus Apple Support. Apple says the out-of-warranty figures are estimates for service from Apple and may be subject to tax. A shipping fee may apply if the phone must be shipped for service, and Apple Authorized Service Providers, independent shops approved by Apple, can set their own fees.
The design helps explain the structure. The Duo uses a dual-battery system, meaning two battery cells working together, a first for iPhone, and a space-saving internal eSIM design, where eSIM is a built-in digital version of the removable SIM card, intended to leave more physical room for battery capacity Apple. It enters StandBy, a low-power display mode that shows basic information, when set down on either the outer or inner display Apple Newsroom. Apple says the Duo has a replaceable Cover Layer, the thin protective surface over the folding screen MacRumors.
Standard service terms apply. In-person support is available at any Genius Bar, Apple's in-store service counter, or Apple Authorized Service Provider. The Apple Limited Warranty covers the iPhone and Apple-branded accessories in the box against manufacturing defects for one year from purchase. It does not cover accidental damage or batteries worn down from normal use. If an issue is ineligible for service, the customer may need to pay the full replacement value. Apple guarantees service and replacement parts for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer, and says parts used in repair or replacement may include new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have been tested and meet functional requirements.
The broader context here is straightforward for buyers to calculate. A single inner display failure without coverage closes much of the gap between going without a plan and paying for AppleCare Plus with Theft and Loss for a year. The low with-coverage prices for the cover layer, front display and back glass point to where Apple expects frequent, lower-severity damage to happen. For IT managers setting up fleets of phones for staff, that split matters. Low-cost outer repairs fit as routine operating expense. Inner display and other damage are larger, budget-level costs.
In my view, the replaceable cover layer is the detail worth watching. A $49 out-of-warranty price and a $19 with-coverage price suggest Apple is treating that surface as a replaceable wear item rather than a major structural repair. If that holds in practice, foldable ownership could feel less fragile than the $999 and $1,499 headlines suggest, and give the Duo a more practical service path than early foldables managed.
