Two Different Models
Alpha School, which operates at alpha.school, brands its approach as "2 Hour Learning." The structure is straightforward: students complete core subjects—math, reading, language arts—in two AI-guided hours each day, leaving the rest of the day for sports, arts, enrichment, or other activities. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade in most locations, with some high school options. According to The Wall Street Journal, venture capitalist Shaun Johnson said he is enrolling his son in Alpha Kindergarten at an annual cost of $75,000. Co-founder MacKenzie Price has stated the school will avoid controversial social and political topics in the classroom.
Forge Prep, based in New Jersey, takes a different approach. The school at forgeprep.org serves grades 5 through 12 and centers its curriculum around student-run businesses. The pitch is concrete: students launch actual ventures, and the school claims graduates leave with $200,000 invested in their own company. Tuition for the first year runs between $24,000 and $36,000. Forge Prep's opening class—the "Founding Class" of 30 students across grades 5 and 8—begins in fall 2026. Before the school had admitted even one student, the Wall Street Journal reported that Forge Prep had received 600 applications. The school has also posted an "AI Head of School" page describing an AI system trained on its founding research and philosophy, a striking move that shows how central AI branding is to its market appeal.
The Core Problem: No Evidence
The demand figures are striking. But interest from affluent families and a large applicant pool tell us nothing about whether these schools actually deliver better learning.
This gap between excitement and evidence is substantial. The Verge found that schools like Forge Prep do not release student performance data, and there is no public evidence that AI-guided private schools of this kind produce better academic outcomes than traditional private or public schools. Parents paying five-figure tuition are, in practical terms, betting on a teaching model that has not been tested at scale. That is their choice to make—but it deserves to be stated directly.
We have seen similar patterns in education technology before. Learning management platforms, free online courses (MOOCs), tablet-based classrooms, and adaptive learning software have all attracted serious investment and serious believers, only to have longitudinal studies arrive later and dampen initial expectations. Some proved useful in specific contexts; many did not survive the reality that sustainable learning is simply hard to create at scale. The schools being discussed here are early-stage. Forge Prep has not yet held its first class. Alpha School's "2 Hour Learning" claim invites scrutiny. The research literature on how people actually learn—on how practice and spacing of repetition affect memory and skill—does not clearly support compressing serious academic instruction to two hours per day, though it is possible that AI systems that adapt to each student's pace could change that calculation for certain students. But we do not yet have the data to know.
What These Schools Signal
What is measurable is the market these operators are targeting. The willingness of wealthy families to pay $25,000 to $75,000 annually for an unproven, AI-centered curriculum suggests something worth understanding. These parents may be deeply frustrated with existing private schools. More likely, though, they belong to a cohort of early adopters convinced that AI will change the nature of work and knowledge so quickly that traditional credentials—diplomas, degrees, school names—will lose their value before their children finish school. A venture capitalist enrolling his kindergartner in a $75,000-a-year AI school is not primarily buying a traditional education; he is making a bet on the future of what matters in human capital.
Whether that bet will prove right is unknowable now. What these schools represent in the immediate term is a real-world test case: small in total enrollment, high in revenue per student, and so far exempt from the public accountability rules that govern state-funded schools. When the outcomes eventually become clear—in five, ten, or more years—they will be worth examining closely.
