Philadelphia's Jewish history museum could join the Smithsonian

A Philadelphia museum could join the Smithsonian.
A congressional commission will study whether the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia should become part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The plan was reported by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on 13 October 2026 and noted by ARTnews on 14 October 2026.
The Weitzman, located in Philadelphia, tells the story of Jewish life in the United States. A bipartisan group — meaning Democrats and Republicans — from both chambers of the US Congress is backing the idea of a Smithsonian museum devoted to that history, according to the museum. Joining the Smithsonian would shift it from an independent museum to part of the federally funded network that runs many of the best-known free museums in Washington.
The groundwork was laid in the 118th Congress, which sat in 2023-2024. Two matching proposals, H.R. 7764 in the House of Representatives and S. 4001 in the Senate, called for a commission, a small appointed body asked to study an issue, to examine a potential transfer, a legal move of the museum into the Smithsonian, Congress.gov records show. That proposal became law as Public Law 118-144, and President Joe Biden signed the bill, the museum announced in December 2024.
Smithsonian leaders have already put the issue on paper. Approved minutes from the Smithsonian Board of Regents, the institution's governing board, for its 8 April 2024 meeting refer to H.R. 7764. Minutes from the board's 27 January 2025 meeting and from its Executive Committee on 16 January 2025 again note the commission to study the potential transfer.
What makes this stand out is the process. The commission will not move the building. It will examine whether, and how, a Philadelphia-based museum can sit inside a mostly Washington-based system.
For visitors, this means no change yet. Admission, exhibitions and programmes carry on as normal while the study runs its course. The Weitzman Museum keeps a public page collecting updates on the Smithsonian effort. If the commission recommends a transfer, Congress and the Smithsonian would still need to act. Until then, the question is open.
