Street Fighter targets $25m to $35m opening to lead crowded weekend

Paramount's Street Fighter is set to win the North American box office with $25 million to $35 million in its opening weekend, according to projections reported by Variety.
The film opens on 16 Oct. 2026, two days after the 14 Oct. projections. It will play in 3,500 theatres in domestic, the United States and Canada. That range would put it well clear of three other new releases.
The reboot is directed by Kitao Sakurai and stars Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, with the story set in 1993, as reported by Variety. It was co-financed by Legendary and Capcom for $82 million, with Paramount handling distribution. It is also projected to earn roughly $35 million overseas from 65 markets.
It is the third live-action take on the long-running video game series. The 1994 Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, earned $100 million worldwide without adjusting for inflation. The 2009 follow-up, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, earned $12.8 million against a $50 million production budget.
Disney's Whalefall is next in line. It is projected to open with $10 million to $12 million from 3,065 venues in North America, according to Variety. The survival drama cost $60 million to produce and was directed by Brian Duffield. That budget leaves it needing a long run.
Then comes documentary. A24's You Can See Everything, about Elizabeth Holmes, is aiming for $7 million to $8 million from just 800 locations. The film cost around $7 million to produce. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim spent more than three years making it.
Focus Features' Sense and Sensibility remake rounds out the weekend. It is targeting $5 million to $8 million from 2,436 screens in North America. It carries a $25 million budget.
What makes this stand out is the spread. One weekend offers a video game action film, a survival drama, a true-crime documentary and a Jane Austen remake. For audiences, that means four very different choices side by side.
