Austin Abrams plays scuba diver Jay Gardiner, a man swallowed whole by a sperm whale, in Whalefall, the survival thriller from writer-director Brian Duffield, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film centres almost entirely on Gardiner's fight to get out. The screenplay is credited to Duffield and Daniel Kraus, and the studio lists the film for release on October 16, 2026, with a PG-13 rating, according to 20th Century Studios.

Shooting a story set inside a whale was punishing. Duffield said it was the hardest thing anyone on the crew had ever done, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The production had to sustain long stretches inside a tight, dark space with one performer carrying much of the running time.

The release arrives two days after Duffield discussed the project in detail on October 14. That timing puts Whalefall on the October calendar as a theatrical survival thriller led by Abrams, with Emily Rudd also in the cast.

Duffield reached Hollywood through scripts before he moved into directing. He first landed on the Black List, the annual survey of Hollywood's most liked unproduced screenplays, in 2010 with a spec script — a script written without a buyer — called Your Bridesmaid Is a Bitch. That script was purchased by Skydance Media chief executive David Ellison and Dana Goldberg. He returned to the list in 2011 with his Western spec Jane Got a Gun.

His directorial debut came in 2018 with Spontaneous, produced by Awesomeness Films. It adapts Aaron Starmer's book about two high school students who fall in love while members of their senior class randomly combust.

In spring 2021, Duffield took another spec to market, the alien-invasion story No One Will Save You with Kaitlyn Dever attached to star. 20th Century acquired it and positioned the virtually dialogue-free film as a streaming title for Hulu. The story follows a young woman whose home is invaded by aliens.

For viewers following Duffield's path, there is a clear through line. He has favoured contained, high-concept stories built around a single central performance, and he has worked repeatedly with actors before their wider breakouts. In 2017, for example, he collaborated with Matt Shakman on an unsold pilot starring Emily Rudd, who now appears in Whalefall.

Whalefall is dated for October 16, 2026, according to The Daily Beast.
