Zelenskyy Says He Feels Betrayed by Trump Over Starlink Limits

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he feels personally betrayed by Donald Trump after Ukraine's military lost key access to Starlink satellite communications.
He spoke in London on Oct. 14, ahead of a meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Downing Street. He accused Trump of picking the other side over the restriction. The Guardian
What happened to Starlink
Ukraine's military reported overnight that Starlink was no longer working at speeds greater than 100mph, without explanation. Kyiv later said SpaceX had imposed new limits on military-grade Starlink terminals. It said it had lost some critical access to a military version of the system with no warning. Ukraine said the new restrictions are disrupting its military. Reuters
Asked whether the restriction was deliberate and whether he felt betrayed by Trump, Zelenskyy replied "Really, yes." He added that it was more complicated than his emotions and that it was a pity Ukraine was losing a strong partner. The claim that Starlink was blocked by SpaceX and the United States at 1am came from an interview with Piers Morgan, not from a Guardian interview.
In that Morgan interview, Zelenskyy said the Starlink decision will bring a lot of human losses and that people will die. He described frontline dependence on low-latency satellite links, meaning fast connections with almost no delay for command and control, orders, drone video, and targeting. At the same time, Russia launched ballistic missiles at Ukraine without any advance warning from the US for a second night.
Intelligence sharing and oil refineries
Zelenskyy also said in an NPR interview aired Wednesday that Ukrainian military advisers had received threats from the US that intelligence sharing could be limited in the future. Trump denied on Tuesday, Oct. 13, that his administration had cut intelligence sharing with Ukraine. The two accounts leave unresolved whether signals intelligence, or intercepted communications, overhead ISR cueing, or tips from surveillance aircraft and satellites, and missile-warning data flows were interrupted, degraded, or only threatened.
Trump separately demanded that Ukraine stop striking Russian oil refineries, which he blamed for the high cost of diesel. Zelenskyy said he had not heard of the deal until Trump announced it on Truth Social. The Guardian
London meetings and Europe's limits
In London, Zelenskyy met King Charles at Buckingham Palace earlier on Wednesday before meeting Burnham. Burnham met Zelenskyy in Downing Street on Wednesday and said Britain's support for Ukraine will not change. During the visit, Zelenskyy warned Trump about being on the 'wrong side of history' as Starlink access was throttled, according to Sky News reporting. Sky News
Ukraine's problems with Starlink and U.S. satellite data affect drone missions and missile warnings. Europe has no quick fix for those disruptions, according to Reuters reporting on Oct. 14. That assessment points to gaps in Europe's own satellite communications capacity, terminal inventory or available dishes, and authority to direct electro-optical and synthetic aperture radar satellites, meaning camera and radar imaging satellites. In my view, the dispute fuses three pressure points into one public rupture. The first is tactical communications. The second is strategic warning. The third is US pressure over deep strikes on refineries. Kyiv is using unusually personal language to lock in European political cover while testing whether Washington will treat connectivity and intelligence as leverage over strike policy. Whether London can convert pledges of constancy into bandwidth, terminals, and alternative warning feeds will shape the next phase more than the exchange of accusations.
