Real Madrid beat Roma 4-3 in the Champions League after scoring three goals in the final seven minutes.

The Spanish side trailed late at the Stadio Olimpico before turning the game on its head. The 4-3 win also gave manager Jose Mourinho victory on his return to Roma, one of his former clubs, according to BBC Sport.

The tie was a Matchday 2 fixture in the league phase, the opening stage of the competition where clubs play in one large table rather than small groups. Roma hosted the game in Rome, with Mourinho taking his Madrid team back to familiar ground, as previewed by UEFA.

Roma went into the night without a win over Real Madrid for 19 years. For a few minutes it looked like that run might continue in style. The score stood at 3-3 before Madrid found their late rush, as recorded in the BBC Sport live coverage.

Mourinho had set the tone the day before. "We put pressure on ourselves because we want to win," he said at his press conference. He also said he thinks both Real Madrid and Roma will qualify from the league phase, according to Real Madrid.

After the final whistle, Madrid described the result as another memorable comeback in the competition. Midfielder Federico Valverde said: "I'm proud that the team shows resilience."

The result continues Madrid's reset under Mourinho. He returned to the club as coach this summer, with the club starting afresh after a difficult period, as reported by Reuters. At the time he said the team must come before personal feelings in selection.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Seven minutes. Three goals. A game that was slipping away, then gone the other way. For fans, this means an early-season night to remember, and a story Roma and Madrid supporters will tell each other for years.
