Pearl Mackie leads one-woman drama Baby at Brixton House

Pearl Mackie is on stage alone in Baby, a one-woman drama about a young mother rebuilding her life after prison. The production opened at Brixton House in south London.
The venue lists the run as 8 to 31 October. It describes the play as provocative and focused on one woman's desire to survive, according to Brixton House.
Baby is written by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti. Mackie performs as Baby. The production is directed by Milli Bhatia and co-produced by Clean Break, meaning the two organisations made it together, according to WhatsOnStage.
It is a solo show. One actor carries the whole story.
The story centres on motherhood inside the constraints of the criminal justice system. The Guardian describes it as a young mother's struggle to get life back on track after time behind bars. Clean Break describes it in similar terms, as a provocative play about survival against long odds.
Clean Break is a theatre company whose work centres on women affected by the criminal justice system. Mackie said before rehearsals that she had long admired the company, according to WhatsOnStage.
The creative team includes set designer Khadijah Raza and sound designer Elena Peña. Production photography for the show is credited to Helen Murray by Brixton House.
Brixton House notes that Mackie is best known for her role as Bill Potts. Here she plays the single part of Baby.
Brixton House sits in the heart of Brixton. It was formerly known as Ovalhouse Theatre. Its history goes back to the 1930s, when graduates of Christ Church, Oxford set up a space for young people.
Both The Guardian and WhatsOnStage have published reviews of the Brixton House run. The Guardian review appeared on 14 October, with the WhatsOnStage review following on 15 October.
