Norgaard storms late to lead lightning-hit India Championship opener

Denmark's Niklas Norgaard leads the DP World India Championship after a storm-hit opening day at Delhi Golf Club.
Norgaard shot a six-under-par 66 on Thursday 15 October to move one shot clear at the top. Six under means he took six shots fewer than the course standard for the round. His card featured one eagle, six birdies and two bogeys, according to BBC Sport.
Then he caught fire. Norgaard made an eagle — two shots under par on a single hole — plus five birdies across his final seven holes to snatch the outright lead.
The day had started in chaos. Play was suspended because of lightning shortly after 06:30 BST and did not resume for five hours. Many players were unable to finish their first 18 holes before the close, so the leaderboard remains incomplete.
Tom McKibbin sits closest to Norgaard on five under par. The Northern Irishman made six birdies and one bogey in his 67. Spain's Eugenio Chacarra and Belgium's Thomas Detry also finished on five under.
Rory McIlroy is four shots off the lead on two under par. He sits three behind McKibbin after the first round. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood matched McIlroy on two under. The pair were grouped together for the opening round.
For fans, this means the Race to Dubai battle stays live. McIlroy started the week third in the season-long standings, behind leader Patrick Reed and second-placed Chacarra. A strong week in New Delhi would tighten that race with the season running down.
McKibbin adds another thread. His only DP World Tour win so far came at the European Open in Germany in 2023, and he has played on the LIV Golf tour since January 2025. He and McIlroy both came through Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
Plenty can still shift on Friday morning. With groups to return and complete round one, Norgaard's one-shot edge is thin. A fast start from the unfinished players could change the top of the board before the second round truly begins.
