Alexander McQueen is parting ways with creative director Seán McGirr.

Kering, the French luxury group that owns the British fashion house, announced the departure on Thursday, 15 October. The group said new creative leadership for McQueen would be named soon, according to WWD.

McGirr is the designer who leads the house’s collections. That role, creative director, sets the look of the runway shows, the clothes in store and much of the brand’s public image.

He succeeded Sarah Burton at McQueen. Kering appointed him in 2023, after his spell as head of menswear at JW Anderson, the London-based fashion label, according to Reuters.

His most recent work was still in front of audiences. McGirr was credited as creative director for McQueen’s Spring Summer 2026 presentation in Paris on 5 October 2025. The house also lists its Autumn Winter 2026 collection as designed by McGirr.

General readers may know his designs from the red carpet. Lana Del Rey wore custom-made Alexander McQueen by McGirr to the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” Costume Institute Gala in 2024.

The change sits inside a wider reset at Kering. Gianfranco D’Attis was named president and chief executive of Alexander McQueen earlier this year. He was previously chief executive of Prada, the Italian fashion house.

At group level, Luca de Meo is chief executive officer of Kering. Kering appointed him in September 2025. Kering has also announced the departure of Anthony Vaccarello from Saint Laurent, the Paris fashion house it owns, after a 10-year tenure.

For fans, this means the next chapter is a waiting game. McQueen has not named a successor. The next designer will shape everything from the next show to what stars wear on big nights out.
