Lisandro Martinez has apologised and been fined by Manchester United for criticising the club's hierarchy.

United acted after the defender met club leaders and head coach Michael Carrick on Thursday, 15 October, to discuss his comments, according to BBC.

Martinez spoke out after United's 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Europe's top club competition. The loss came on Tuesday. He said Carrick had been left with an under-equipped squad.

He also said he expected more investment in the squad and more from technical director Jason Wilcox, who leads recruitment and long-term squad planning.

The row has added noise around a difficult start. United sit 13th in the Premier League, England's top flight, with six points from six games. They have two wins from nine in all competitions this season.

Martinez's own future is also unsettled. His current contract runs to the end of the season. United hold an option to extend it by 12 months, but have not yet decided whether to use it.

Former United captain Roy Keane called the situation "a bit of a circus" on The Overlap podcast. Carrick will face questions at a news conference on Friday ahead of United's game against Leeds United on Sunday.

What makes this stand out is the timing. A senior player questioned the bosses in public, then had to walk it back within days. For fans, this means the focus now shifts quickly to Carrick and the response on the pitch.
