Hipkins spoke in the auditorium of the local girls' high school in Kelston. He was joined by Carmel Sepuloni, Phil Twyford and Vanushi Walters, before a crowd of a few hundred locals and party volunteers.
Sepuloni has been the MP for Kelston for over a decade. Walters, Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson, told supporters to bring their "hope and rage" to the election campaign now rather than to marches after the election.
Hipkins claimed in his speech that Luxon had left people $6000 worse off. The figure has been rolled out as Labour's new attack line.
In Greymouth, Luxon spoke to about 100 supporters. He spoke for about 20 minutes, then mingled with attendees and posed for photos.
Property developer Geoff Ball also spoke at the Greymouth rally. He said the country has to be run like a business and "It's not a handout society."
