Reid Scott is out of Law & Order, and his character did not get a quiet exit.

Senior Detective Vincent Riley, played by Scott, was killed in Season 26, Episode 2, titled "Into the Mystic." The episode aired on NBC on Thursday, October 15, according to Deadline.

Riley is shot twice in the chest by Ray Biller outside a bar. He later dies in hospital. It is a brutal end after only two episodes of the new season.

Scott joined the long-running crime drama in Season 23. His decision to leave came down to the strain of a cross-country commute to New York for filming, Deadline reported.

The rest of the episode follows the hunt for justice. Theo Walker, played by David Ajala, and Lieutenant Jessica Brady, played by Maura Tierney, lead the police response. James Badge Dale appears as Robert Calvino, brought in to help investigate Riley's death.

The case moves quickly to court. Prosecutor Nolan Price, played by Hugh Dancy, and District Attorney Nicholas Baxter, played by Tony Goldwyn, handle the trial. Ryan Eggold returns as Matt Riley, Vincent's brother, appearing in court as the family seeks justice. Biller is found guilty of first-degree murder.

For viewers, this means a gap in the detective line-up only weeks into the season. Calvino's arrival points to how the squad will fill it.

Season 26 premiered on NBC on October 8, according to NBC Insider. Law & Order airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, with new episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.
