Billy Loughnane will be officially installed as Flat racing's champion jockey at Ascot on Saturday, 17 October. He is 20 years old and the youngest champion in more than a century, The Guardian.

He will be 20 years and 229 days old on crowning day. That makes him the youngest rider to receive the Flat title in 102 years, Racing Post.

The rise has been fast. Loughnane had his first ride as a 16-year-old apprentice — a young rider learning the trade — at Wolverhampton in October 2022. Three full seasons later he is champion.

He took the lead in this year's title race in mid-July. He moved past defending champion Oisin Murphy and stayed in front to the end of the season.

Family is at the heart of the story. Loughnane is the son of trainer Mark Loughnane, who gave him his earliest rides and winners. His main employer is now Newmarket trainer George Boughey, and his rides are booked by agent Tony Hind.

He hates standing still. "I'm bored when I'm not riding," Loughnane told The Guardian in an interview published on 16 October.

That hunger has shaped his year. He spent last winter riding in Dubai and kicked off 2026 with his first winner there. In 2025 he became the first Flat jockey in Britain to ride 200 winners in a calendar year.

Flat racing is racing on the level, without jumps, and its biggest prizes include Group 1 races, the top level of the sport. Loughnane's third Group 1 win came in the July Cup, when he won aboard Comanche Brave on his first ever ride for trainer Donnacha O'Brien.

Yet he named a different race as his most satisfying success of 2026. That was Bow Echo's win in the 2,000 Guineas in May, one of the five Classics that are the most historic Flat races for three-year-olds.

What makes this stand out is the age gap to other greats. Pat Eddery was 22 when he won his first jockeys' title. Frankie Dettori was 23.

Loughnane got there earlier, and by riding and riding. The presentation at Ascot will make it formal.
