Bumblebees show facial behaviors in response to pleasant and unpleasant tastes that closely resemble the emotional responses documented in mammals. A new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences used slow-motion video to record these behaviors in detail.

Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia and Southern Medical University in China presented bees with five solutions: 60% sugar, 20% sugar, plain water, 5% salt, and quinine at 1 millimolar concentration. After tasting sweet solutions, bees extended their mouthparts (called a glossa) and kept licking — a behavior the researchers call "post-consumption glossa." When exposed to salt or quinine, bees shook their heads and wiped their mouths. The team characterizes these patterns as analogues to "liking" and "disliking" responses observed in primates and rodents, per The Guardian.

The key question was whether these responses are automatic reflexes or something more complex. The researchers tested this by running trials across 18 colonies under different conditions: heat exposure, varying levels of hunger, and different drug doses. The critical finding: when bees were exposed to heat, their response to water or mild salt solutions switched from neutral or negative to positive. This context-dependence — the idea that an animal's internal state changes how it responds to the same stimulus — is what suggests the responses may involve something like feeling rather than automatic reaction.

Professor Andrew Barron of Macquarie University, a co-author, stated plainly: "It tells us there is an inner life to the insect."

Associate Professor Thomas White, an entomologist at the University of Sydney who did not participate in the study, noted that this work is significant for focusing on positive affective states in invertebrates — pleasure and preference — rather than pain and fear responses, which have dominated invertebrate welfare research.

Why the Methods Matter

The distinction between automatic reflex and genuine affect carries real consequences. Regulatory bodies and ethics frameworks treat these differently. In debates over whether invertebrates deserve welfare protections, the central question is whether an animal's negative reaction involves actual suffering or simply a protective withdrawal circuit that requires no inner experience.

What makes this study potentially important to that debate is its focus on positive responses. Most prior research on invertebrate welfare has examined pain or stress. This work documents that bees show context-sensitive, state-dependent attraction to rewarding stimuli — and that the specific patterns of these behaviors match the taxonomy of mammalian hedonic responses. That parallel is harder to dismiss as mere mechanical reflex.

The comparison to primates and rats is doing real work here. In the scientific literature, mammalian facial-action patterns are linked to specific brain regions (the nucleus accumbens) and chemical signals (opioids) that bees do not possess in equivalent form. The researchers are therefore making a functional analogy — the outputs are similar — rather than claiming the underlying mechanisms are the same. It is a defensible position, but it is also where skeptics will push back: similar behavior produced by completely different neural hardware does not necessarily mean the bees experience subjective emotion.

What This Means Going Forward

The study does not claim to prove that bumblebees are conscious in a philosophical sense, and the authors are clear about this limitation. What it does accomplish is shift the baseline of evidence. If bees with roughly one million neurons can show context-dependent hedonic responses, the toolkit for studying insect inner states becomes more practical and rigorous.

For commercial entomology and pollinator welfare policy, the practical implications follow. Bumblebee colonies are already regulated commodities in several jurisdictions for greenhouse pollination. Evidence of state-dependent affective processing will likely enter future policy debates over colony transport, pesticide exposure limits, and captive-rearing standards.

The broader scientific question, though, is evolutionary. Bees and vertebrates diverged roughly 600 million years ago. If core features of hedonic valuation evolved independently in lineages that split so early, that points to either powerful evolutionary pressure favoring affect-like processing, or to precursor mechanisms that are ancient and more widespread than traditional consciousness research — which has focused mainly on vertebrates — has recognized. Either possibility carries significant implications for how we understand the distribution of inner life across the animal kingdom.
