Indonesia's zombie outbreak is leaving the villages for the city.

Screenplay Films has unveiled the first teaser for "Zona Merah: Dead City," a big-screen adaptation of the Indonesian zombie series "Zona Merah," with an Indonesian cinema release set for Jan. 14, 2027, according to Variety. The teaser is hosted on the company's official YouTube channel as "Official Teaser Film Zona Merah."

The film follows a Vidio original series that passed 34 million views on the streamer, Variety reported. That series played out largely in the countryside, among villages and quarantine sites. The scale is bigger this time.

"Dead City" shifts the infection onto city streets and into shopping malls, with action also staged at an airport. Screenplay Films is billing the picture as the largest zombie production ever organised in Indonesia. It was filmed across three cities in Indonesia with hundreds of extras.

Sidharta Tata directs, with Fajar Martha Santosa as co-director. Tata is known to genre audiences for work in Indonesian horror and action. Santosa shares directing credit on the feature.

Several familiar faces return. Aghni Haque, Andri Mashadi, Devano, Maria Theodore and Lukman Sardi are back from the series. They are joined by new cast members Bryan Domani, Shindy Huang, Myesha Lin, Derby Romero and Luna Maya.

Maya also serves as an executive producer, a role that normally involves backing and guiding a production rather than day-to-day direction. Producer Wicky V. Olindo leads the project for Screenplay Films.

Beyond Indonesia, Korea's Barunson E&A is handling international sales, the business of selling distribution rights country by country, according to Variety. The company had earlier launched the title to buyers at the Cannes Film Market, as reported by Variety.

For fans, this means a change of terrain. The threat is no longer contained in remote villages. It is loose where crowds gather.
