Fortnite is officially on the way to Linux. Epic Games detailed the plan in an update published on 16 October 2026, saying work is under way to bring its battle royale shooter to the open-source operating system. Eurogamer There is no release date yet.

There is a catch. Epic said Fortnite will launch on Linux only if a “critical mass of distro maintainers” meets its security requirements. A distro is a packaged version of Linux, such as Ubuntu or Fedora, and maintainers are the teams that look after each one. Epic said it will work directly with those teams to get the needed protections in place.

The issue is cheating. Epic said its Easy Anti-Cheat software, the tool that scans for hacks and tampering, could not offer the same level of protection on Linux as on Windows. To close the gap, the company plans to use a signed kernel, signed kernel modules and secure boot with attestation. In plain terms, that means checks to prove the core of the computer and the software loaded at start-up have not been altered.

Epic plans to test that updated approach in Fortnite first before offering it to other developers. Epic said the Linux work for Fortnite will be made available to other studios interested in bringing their games to Linux.

On Linux, Fortnite will be available through the Epic Games Store launcher, the app players use to download and update games. That launcher is itself getting a rebuild. Epic announced on 14 October 2026 that a preview version of its new Epic Games Launcher is live on Windows, Mac and Linux, described by the company as faster, more responsive and with a new look. Epic Games Epic has also described the rebuilt store as “vibe-coded”, a term for software built with heavy use of artificial intelligence coding tools, and said that version is coming to Linux. The move is a change of course. In February 2022, Epic chief executive Tim Sweeney said the company did not plan to update Fortnite to run on SteamOS for Valve’s Steam Deck handheld. The Verge SteamOS is a Linux-based system. Epic confirmed on 14 October 2026 that Fortnite is now in development for Linux. TechPowerUp

For players, this means patience. Linux users have long had to rely on workarounds to play many big online shooters, or skip them entirely. A native Fortnite with working anti-cheat would remove that barrier, if the security pieces fall into place.
