Trump and Zelensky Clash Over Energy Strikes and Russia Deals

U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky clashed openly on October 16 over Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy sites and Washington's dealings with Moscow.
Trump described Ukraine's resumption of strikes on Russian refineries as a "disgrace," according to Reuters. Zelensky had declared that Kyiv was abandoning a ceasefire covering energy sites, an agreement to pause attacks on that infrastructure.
Ukraine then struck a Russian oil refinery after that declaration, Reuters reported. The strike made the disagreement over energy targets public.
On the same day, Zelensky praised "real leaders" in Europe as his relationship with Trump deteriorated, according to KESQ. In the week before October 16, Trump had struck a deal allowing Russian diesel exports that blindsided Zelensky and European leaders.
Zelensky also accused the United States of envisaging more deals with Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly for gas, according to CNN. The White House has stated that Trump began negotiations with Putin and Zelensky.
The energy dispute followed Trump's call for Ukraine to replace Zelensky as its leader. Zelensky visited Britain afterward and received UK support, according to Reuters. The two presidents had held a bilateral meeting on September 22, as shown in a White House video.
