Jofra Archer extends Sussex stay to 12 seasons with one-year deal

Jofra Archer will stay at Sussex for a 12th season after signing a one-year contract extension. The county confirmed the deal on 16 October 2026, extending a link that began with his debut in 2016. BBC Sport
Archer has taken 223 first-class wickets for Sussex at an average of 25.17. First-class cricket is the long-format, red-ball game played over three or four days at county level. Those numbers have held up despite long spells out injured.
He missed four years of red-ball cricket before returning for Sussex in June 2025. That comeback opened the door to Test cricket again. He played his first Test since 2021 when England picked him to face India in July 2025.
The winter brought another test. Archer took nine wickets on the 2025-26 Ashes tour to Australia before a side strain ended his series in the third Test in Adelaide. A side strain is an injury to the muscles around the ribs, a common and painful problem for fast bowlers.
He responded strongly during the home summer. Archer took 23 wickets in five Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan. Five matches in one summer is a heavy load for any quick, let alone one rebuilding after years away.
What makes this stand out is the continuity. Sussex gave Archer his first sustained chance in English county cricket. He remains centrally contracted to England, but Hove is still his domestic base. Sussex Cricket
For fans, this means more of the same deal. England first when fit and selected. Sussex when available. And a fast bowler with genuine pace still tied to the county where it started.
