Nas calls for unity in rap and teases music honouring hip-hop's roots

Nas has called on hip-hop to stand together, saying the music business forgets its foundations and fails to pay them properly.
The rapper posted a letter to Instagram on Oct. 15, setting out his frustrations with rap and the wider industry. He said he had spent the past year watching culture happen while working on new music, according to Billboard.
In the note, Nas wrote that the music game forgets or does not compensate the foundation. Great artists have been stolen from and ripped off, he said. He added that the industry has lost sight of its roots, as reported by Yahoo.
His message ended with a direct appeal. “We gotta take a stand as one,” he wrote. He closed another passage with the line: “No Knowledge of self is certain death!”
He also pointed forward. “It’s time for a celebration of the music,” Nas wrote while teasing a next project that pays homage to hip-hop’s roots and pillars.
That tease was linked to the tag “BLAK MUSIC 2026,” according to AllHipHop. No release date, tracklist or label details were confirmed in the post.
His most recent studio album was Light-Years, a collaboration with DJ Premier released in December 2025. It reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart, the US weekly ranking of rap albums.
Reaction came quickly on Instagram. Fat Joe, AZ and DJ Premier were among those saluting the statement.
For fans, this means the next step looks backward to move forward. Nas has form here. Alongside the label Mass Appeal, he has been involved in the Legend Has It album series, a project aimed at honouring hip-hop veterans, as detailed by Rolling Stone.
