Wolves fight back to beat Burnley as Chirewa settles Turf Moor thriller

Wolves came from behind to beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor on Friday 16 October 2026.
Jamie Vardy put Burnley ahead. Fer López levelled before half-time. Then substitute Tawanda Chirewa struck the winner to end Wolves' run of two straight defeats, The Guardian reported.
Vardy scored his first Burnley goal in the 20th minute. He beat Wolves goalkeeper José Sá to give the home fans something to cheer.
That lead did not last. Burnley captain Kyle Walker made a mistake. López punished it with the equaliser before the break.
Wolves manager César Peixoto turned to his bench in the 72nd minute. He sent on Chirewa, a 23-year-old Zimbabwe international, for Sean Neave.
The change worked fast. Mateus Mané pounced on a heavy touch from Igor Julio. He set up Chirewa for the finish that won it.
It was a much-needed win for Wolves. Raúl Jiménez and Adam Armstrong had joined their injury list in the week before the game.
Both clubs were relegated from the Premier League last season, finishing as the bottom two, BBC Sport noted. This was an EFL Championship fixture, England's second tier, played at 20:00 BST under the Friday night lights.
For Burnley, the wait goes on. Their home run without a league win now stands at 21 games. Their last home league victory was against Leeds in the Premier League on 18 October.
It followed more late pain. On the preceding Tuesday, Charlton's Ivan Mesik equalised in the sixth minute of added time against Burnley.
What makes this stand out is how familiar it felt for the home crowd. Another lead. Another slip. Another quiet walk out of Turf Moor.
Burnley get two chances to fix it soon. Portsmouth visit next. Then Blackburn arrive on 22 November.
