The Princess of Wales has commissioned new research into how time outdoors shapes babies and young children.

The work will examine how spending time in nature can support emotional and social development in the earliest years. It will be run by the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, the early-years research arm within the Royal Foundation. That is the vehicle carrying the project forward.

The Royal Foundation set out the plan under the title "The Princess of Wales commissions new work exploring the role of nature in early childhood". The announcement is dated 16 October 2026. Royal Foundation

The Duchy of Cornwall has joined the effort as a founding partner. The Duchy, the Prince of Wales's landed estate, will back the Princess of Wales's early years research project in that early role, according to reporting on the launch. Royal Central

In practice, that pairs two parts of the royal operation. The Centre provides the research base on early childhood. The Duchy provides land, reach and a practical place to test ideas about children spending time outside.

The Centre is led by Christian Guy, its executive director. His team sits inside the Royal Foundation structure and focuses on the first five years of life, from pregnancy through to school age in the wider public debate, but here the brief is tighter: nature and what it does for young minds and relationships.

The announcement itself is short on method. It commissions work. It does not yet set out who will carry out the fieldwork, over what period, or where findings will be published.

What makes this stand out is the simplicity. No new building. No gala launch. Just a question most parents already ask in the park: does fresh air help little ones thrive?

For families reading this at home, that is the thread to follow. The Princess of Wales, Catherine on first formal mention, has made early childhood her core public theme. This project keeps that focus and moves it outside, into gardens, parks and green corners close to home.

Expect the detail to come from the Centre in due course. For now, the record is the commission, the date and the partners named.
