Masked protesters stormed the red carpet outside London's Palace Theatre on Thursday, 15 October, as guests arrived for a gala performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The group moved onto the carpet while celebrities were arriving for the evening show. Those taking part wore masks, hats and goggles to hide their identities, according to Variety. One protester wore a T-shirt reading “Rowling money kills.”

Several protesters then lay down on the carpet. Security guards dragged them away to clear the arrivals area.

The protest was staged by activists campaigning for transgender rights. ITV News reported on 15 October that several protesters rushed the carpet ahead of the gala.

Guests listed for the night included broadcasters Vanessa Feltz, Angellica Bell and Richard Arnold, along with The Chase star Anne Hegerty. The Palace Theatre is in London’s West End, the city’s main theatre district. A gala performance is a special, invitation-heavy show, often used to mark an occasion for a long-running production.

Neil Blair, the agent for Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, responded after the incident. He told Variety he respects peaceful activism but said those rights must be exercised without putting audience members, performers and theatre staff at risk.

He added that every fan deserves to enjoy Harry Potter in an atmosphere of respect and security. Live theatre should remain welcoming and safe, he said. His comments were also picked up in an October 2026 report by Deadline.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child began life as a play in two parts. It has since been reconfigured into a single performance running for almost three hours.

For people heading to the show, it meant an unusual start to the night. A red-carpet arrival became a brief standoff before the performance itself.
