Sonay Kartal stuns Ostapenko in twin tiebreaks to reach Wuhan final

World No. 170 Sonay Kartal beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9) 7-6 (7-5) to reach the Wuhan Open final on 17 October.
The British No. 5 is the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format was introduced in 1990, according to BBC Sport. A WTA 1000 sits one level below the four Grand Slams. She did it the hard way.
Kartal trailed 4-1 in both sets against the former Grand Slam champion from Latvia. She then saved three set points, a chance to close the set, in the first set and three more in the second.
Both sets went to a tiebreak, the extra race to seven points used when a set reaches 6-6. Kartal took the first 11-9 and the second 7-5. No breaks. No third set. Just nerve.
What makes this stand out is how close it was to slipping away. Ostapenko hits flat and early and gives opponents nothing to settle against. Kartal answered by extending rallies and refusing to miss at the big moments.
The context makes the scoreline even more striking. This was only Kartal's third event back after six months out with a back injury. She was ranked 54th before the lay-off and has fallen to 170th during her absence.
Ostapenko arrived in dangerous form. She had saved three match points to beat second seed Jessica Pegula earlier in Wuhan, her third Top 10 win of 2026, according to WTA. She then beat No. 11 seed Diana Shnaider 7-6(6), 6-1 after coming from 5-2 down and firing 32 winners.
Kartal had already shown she could live with that pace. She reached the semi-finals with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over fifth seed Elina Svitolina. The pair had met twice before, split at one win each.
She will face either Iga Swiatek or Maja Chwalinska in Sunday's final at the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open. For fans, this means a simple equation. One more win completes a comeback few players outside the top 150 ever manage.
