Double Fine Productions has released Thank You Bus Driver, a $5 fast-driving game in the spirit of Crazy Taxi, a couple of months after departing Xbox. It is the first project from Double Fine Action Labs, the studio's label for smaller, experimental games. Engadget

The game is developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Double Fine Action Labs. It costs $5. It is available on Steam for Windows and is Steam Deck Verified, meaning it is tested to run well on Valve's handheld PC, as well as on Epic Games Store, Itch.io, GOG, Humble Store and Game Jolt. Double Fine had announced the game as coming soon on October 14, 2026. Double Fine

In Thank You Bus Driver, the player is a town bus driver who is both rules-driven and reckless. Gameplay involves driving fast, slapping rulebreakers, and throwing them off the bus. The stated final goal is to be appreciated. Double Fine

The release arrived alongside a series of online indie showcases. The Cozy After Dark Showcase featured more than 50 games that are eerie, dark, mysterious or unsettling while also cozy. Among them was Grave Seasons, a murder-mystery farming sim, meaning a farming game with a detective story, developed by Perfect Garbage. Its story lasts an in-game year and can be restarted with a new killer and victims while keeping farming progress.

Other Cozy After Dark entries included DeadRoot, in which the player is a snail that uses a sword and suplexes, Usual June, a third-person action-adventure game about combat, cupcakes and community, and FallBearers, a co-op game in which two players overcome obstacles while transporting bodies to their final resting places.

The Galaxies showcase also featured more than 50 games. Its lineup included Appulse, a pinball-based top-down shooter, meaning a shooting game viewed from above, Guns of Eschaton, a first-person Western Soulslike, meaning a tough shooter with careful, punishing combat in the style of Dark Souls, and Spine, a gun-fu and parkour action title. The Mix Fall Showcase included Zozo and the Lost Dreams, a Saturday morning cartoon-inspired Metroidvania, meaning an exploration platformer with a large connected map that opens up with new abilities, and Nonolith, a puzzle platformer. The MIX Fall Online Showcase 2026 was held online on October 16, 2026. MIX

The calendar around those events is full. The October 2026 edition of the ID@Xbox Showcase Presented by IGN, Microsoft's program for independent games on Xbox, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST and will feature 18 games. IGN IGN partnered with ID@Xbox for an April 2026 showcase, with coverage listing Mistfall Hunter, There Are No Ghosts at the Grand, Aphelion and Solo Leveling among titles to expect. The Convergence Games Showcase October 2026 features all-new trailers and reveals uniting influencers and indie developers, while the Day of the Devs Digital Showcase is held online the day before the Game Awards and features upcoming indie titles.

Xbox Developer Direct 2026 included presentations from Playground Games, Game Freak and Double Fine, with Playground Games bringing two games. Xbox Double Fine announced its game KILN as part of Xbox's Developer Direct. Separately, Double Fine announced at the Xbox Showcase that its next game would be Keeper, described as a beautiful and surreal third-person, atmospheric puzzle adventure, set to launch on October 17, 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, and Xbox Cloud.

The broader context here is distribution scale rather than any single mechanic. A $5, Windows-first release across Steam, Epic, GOG, Itch.io, Humble Store and Game Jolt, with Deck verification on day one, is now standard setup for independents. It lowers the cost of trying an odd premise.

In my view, the pattern in how these showcases group games is telling. Cozy After Dark, Galaxies and Mix are not sorting strictly by genre or engine. They sort by feel and by what the player does. I have watched my own children move between similarly mismatched games without the friction older store categories assumed, and that behavior now looks like the market itself. For working developers, the lesson is to communicate one loop clearly. Drive fast and keep order. Farm and find the killer. Carry the weight together.
