Shanghai's New Opera House Lets You Walk Onto the Roof

You can walk straight up and over Shanghai's new opera house.
The Shanghai Grand Opera House is complete. Architecture practice Snøhetta has finished the 146,786-square-metre building on the Huangpu River waterfront in Shanghai, China, Dezeen.
It officially opens on 17 October 2026. Snøhetta said the launch will take place at 7:30 p.m. Shanghai time on 17 October, Snøhetta.
The building sits in the Houtan neighbourhood, on a stretch of riverfront that has shifted from industrial land to public green space. Snøhetta designed the opera house to work as a civic destination as well as a performance venue.
The clearest sign of that plan is outside. A giant spiral staircase climbs the exterior to a publicly accessible rooftop. You do not need a ticket to climb it.
The roof itself has three jobs. It works as a stage for outdoor performance, an observation deck with river views, and a meeting point, Dezeen.
Inside, the opening triggers a packed first season. The programme lists 82 performances, ArchDaily. That inaugural season runs through 20 February 2027, Designboom.
What makes this stand out for visitors is access. For fans, this means the building stays in use before curtain-up and after curtain-down, with the roof walk open to anyone.
Expect crowds on the stairs first, then in the seats.
