The Philadelphia Eagles placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve on Saturday, Oct. 17, after revealing he has a blood clot in his calf.

The team described the clot as superficial. The designation lands the Super Bowl LIX MVP on the sideline for the foreseeable future. The Guardian

Hurts had already been ruled out Thursday for Sunday's Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers. Tanner McKee will start in his place. Philadelphia Eagles

The timeline goes back to Oct. 4. Hurts took a cleat to the calf during Philadelphia's loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. He did not immediately flag it. He informed the team's medical staff after practice on Oct. 8.

He was back at practice the next day. Then the Eagles flew to London to face Jacksonville.

It was after that trip, following a walk-through on Saturday, Oct. 10, that Hurts had an ultrasound on the calf. That scan found the superficial clot. Eagles medical staff conferred with doctors in London, who concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Hurts could safely play.

Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the flight back to Philadelphia.

This week brought a turn. Hurts was ruled out for Carolina. At first, the Eagles were not planning to put him on injured reserve while they gathered more information on the clot. By Saturday, they made the move, listing the calf issue as the reason. NFL.com

For fans, this means a short-term wait becomes a longer one. Injured reserve keeps Hurts off the active roster while he deals with the calf. McKee gets the call Sunday against Carolina.
