James Austin Johnson Brings Trump to SNL UK in First US-UK Crossover

James Austin Johnson carried his Donald Trump impression across the Atlantic for a surprise turn on SNL U.K.
The American performer appeared as the US president in the show's cold open, the opening sketch before the title sequence. According to Variety, it was the first crossover between the casts of the British edition and the long-running American Saturday Night Live.
The sketch opened on British diplomacy. George Fouracres played U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, played by Freddie Meredith. The premise was a meeting to reaffirm Britain's support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Then Johnson walked in as Trump. The scene played as a job-swap, with the American star stepping into the British show to fill a gap in its roster, Deadline reported. He surveyed the U.K. cast and asked: “You Don’t Have One Guy Who Can Play Trump?”
It landed because the show had never done it before. SNL U.K., which is broadcast on Sky, had not previously featured Trump in its cold open. Johnson’s entrance changed that in one scene.
Reports of the cameo first circulated on 17 October 2026, with Yahoo Entertainment and Deadline covering the sketch before Variety published full details on 18 October 2026.
What makes this stand out for viewers is the shortcut it takes. No introduction. No build-up. One familiar face walks into another country’s show and the joke clicks.
The British edition is still new. It returned to Sky after a first series that drew both attention and scrutiny, as Sky News correspondent Katie Spencer noted in a report on its comeback, covered by Sky News. Cast members Celeste Dring and Meredith have since discussed that early run while promoting newly announced hosts and musical acts, covered by Sky News.
Earlier sketches stayed close to Westminster. One cold open had a fictional Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hijacking King Charles and Queen Camilla’s royal plane, shown by Sky News, while another played Burnham’s welcome for Zelenskyy for laughs about emotional diplomacy, shown by Sky News.
Johnson’s cameo widens the frame. SNL U.K. can now borrow from the American company, and the American company can drop into London. For fans, this means the two shows share the same toy box.
It was brief. It was loud. And it left SNL U.K. with a new option for its opening minutes.
