The memory inside Sony's next PlayStation may already cost over US$680.

Hardware leaker Kepler_L2 made the claim in a reply on the NeoGAF forum, writing that "RAM + NAND alone is over $680." RAM is the console's working memory, while NAND flash storage is the chips that hold games and saves. The comment was reported by TechPowerUp and Eurogamer on 18 October 2026.

Kepler_L2 was answering another user who had suggested Sony could subsidise the PlayStation 6 to sell it at US$680. To subsidise here means to sell the console below what it costs to build. Kepler_L2's reply rejected that idea on cost grounds.

The figure fits earlier claims from the same leaker. In June, Kepler_L2 said the PlayStation 6 bill of materials, the total cost of all its parts, had climbed to close to US$1,000. That was up from an earlier estimate of around US$760.

Sony has not confirmed any of those numbers. Sony Interactive Entertainment chief executive Hideaki Nishino told investors in June that, as a principle, Sony does not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.

Sony has also not confirmed any PlayStation 6 specifications or pricing. The company has said it has not yet decided when to launch the PlayStation 6, nor how much it will cost, according to IGN.

For players, this means the price talk is still guesswork built on leaks. Until Sony announces a date, a specification and a price, the cost of chips points to pressure on the budget, not a price tag.
