UK and EU Home Affairs Chiefs to Meet on Migration and Security Cooperation

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will meet the EU's home affairs commissioner, Magnus Brunner, on Monday to discuss migration, border management, law enforcement cooperation and counter-terrorism.
The meeting will be the second time Mahmood has met Brunner in two months, according to The Guardian. The agenda includes talks on the UK rejoining Eurodac, a database centring on migration, and rejoining some police and security databases it was locked out of after Brexit.
The talks follow a reported fall in Channel crossings by small boats. Latest Frontex data published on Monday showed a 43% decline, according to the same report.
More broadly, detections of irregular crossings at the EU's external borders fell by 26% in 2025 to almost 178,000, Frontex reported earlier this year. That followed a 38% drop in 2024 to the lowest level since 2021.
Brunner's visit also includes several other engagements in London. He will deliver a lecture at King's College London on migration and asylum, and visit the National Counter Terrorism Security Office.
He will also meet MI5 Director General Ken McCallum and senior officials from the UK's child sexual abuse centre to discuss joint efforts to tackle such crimes.
The discussions take place as the EU implements its Pact on Migration and Asylum, a framework of 10 pieces of legislation overhauling how the EU manages its borders, processes asylum applications and shares information among member states.
