Mukiele says Sunderland 'became arrogant' after fourth straight defeat

Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele says his own team may have grown arrogant after a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth left them second-bottom of the Premier League.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mukiele said Sunderland have been "not good enough" since the start of the season. "Maybe because we became arrogant, this is what I think," he added. The defeat was Sunderland's fourth in a row in the league BBC Sport.
As of 18 October 2026, Regis Le Bris's side have taken four points from seven games. That record reads one win, one draw and five defeats. BBC Sport's live coverage described the performance at Bournemouth as "very painful" BBC Sport.
The contrast with last season is stark. After seven games last term, Sunderland had 11 points and sat ninth with three wins, two draws and two defeats. They went on to finish seventh and qualify for the Europa League, the second-tier European club competition, at the first attempt after eight years away from the top flight.
That rise was backed heavily in the market. Sunderland spent £161m on 15 new players after winning promotion in the summer of 2025. They then invested about £60m more on five new recruits in this year's summer transfer window.
Europe has told a different story so far. Sunderland have a 100% record in the Europa League this season after wins over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense. Their league form has gone the other way since that bright start on the continent.
Mukiele called for a reset. He wants Sunderland to get back to basics after the Bournemouth defeat Sunderland Echo.
For supporters, this will sting because last season gave strangers something to share. Ninety minutes at the Stadium of Light felt like a lift for the whole city. Mukiele's words are blunt, but they are also an invitation to remember what worked: hard running, simple passes and defending the box first.
