Ronald Araujo finds a fresh start at Liverpool

Ronald Araujo has gone from the margins at Barcelona to the middle of Liverpool's defence.
The 27-year-old Uruguay international joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Barcelona in August. The deal runs until 30 June 2027, according to FC Barcelona, and was subject to a work permit application, Liverpool FC said at the time.
He has started quickly. Araujo has played in eight of Liverpool's 10 games under head coach Andoni Iraola. Six of those appearances have come at right-back, the wide defensive role, and four at centre-back, the central defensive role.
He has already left his mark at both ends. Araujo scored his first Liverpool goal with a header against LASK. He then produced a backheel assist for Dominik Szoboszlai against Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool needed bodies. Conor Bradley has been out since January with a knee injury. Giovanni Leoni suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, a serious knee injury, on his Liverpool debut in September 2025. Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined with a muscle injury until the November international break.
The club also brought in Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in the summer to add depth. Reuters reported the Araujo loan on 10 August as a move to bolster that injury-hit defence.
Araujo arrived with a complicated recent history. Last season at Barcelona he was granted a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health. He has 29 caps for Uruguay. To make the Liverpool move happen, he took a wage cut.
What makes this stand out is how fast he has settled. For fans, this means a stop-gap signing already feels like part of the furniture.
The future is still open. Liverpool have an option to buy Araujo in the summer for £47m. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez see their Liverpool contracts expire this summer, while the club also hold an option to buy back Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen. Araujo has said it is "too early" to say whether his loan will become permanent, according to ESPN, adding he is "really happy" at Liverpool.
