Art Basel has warned Miami it could move its December fair to Las Vegas. The warning, framed as goodbye Art Basel Miami Beach, hello Art Basel Las Vegas, was reported by The New York Times on 19 October 2026. ARTnews reported the same threat on the same day, linking it to a downturn.

The Miami Beach fair in Florida is one of four Art Basel fairs organised by MCH Group. The company lists the others in Basel in Switzerland, Hong Kong in China and Paris in France, according to MCH Group. Each fair is a marketplace where galleries take stands to exhibit and sell modern and contemporary art to collectors, curators and the public. For anyone new to it, think of a temporary mall for art, with hundreds of dealers under one roof for a few days.

The next edition in Miami Beach is scheduled for 2–6 December. Previews name 272 exhibitors for 2026, alongside an overhauled floor plan and no Meridians section, the platform for large-scale works that do not fit a standard stand, according to ARTnews. Nothing has moved yet. The December dates stand as announced.

That 2026 list is smaller on paper than two recent counts. The 2025 edition, scheduled for 3–7 December, named 285 exhibitors, according to ARTnews. MCH Group's half-year report for 2024 said that year's December edition would host 281 galleries. The numbers describe the size of the gallery list, not sales or attendance.

The Las Vegas warning rests on the most recent reporting, both published on 19 October 2026. The dates and gallery counts come from earlier previews and company reports, which give background rather than the news itself.

The fair has changed shape before. In June and December 2020, the company staged additional editions for gallerists tied to the Basel and Miami Beach shows, according to its 2020 annual report. Those were stopgap formats described in that report.

An exhibitor count is simply a headcount of galleries with stands. A floor plan decides where those stands sit in the halls. Removing a section such as Meridians alters the mix of large works on view.

What makes this stand out for a casual reader is the scale of the what-if. A shift of a few dozen names on a list of almost 300 changes the floor. A move of cities would change where thousands stand to see the work.

For visitors, this means the calendar holds for now. Miami Beach in Florida keeps the December slot. Las Vegas in Nevada is the alternative named in the reporting. No move has been confirmed, only the warning.
