Grupo Frontera opened Billboard Latin Music Week on Monday, Oct. 19 with the story of its fast rise as an independent group. The band spoke at the Faena Theater on the event's kickoff day about moving from local parties to an international audience.

The session was titled 'From Local Creativity to International Expansion: The Grupo Frontera Case Study' and was presented by The Orchard. The Orchard is a distribution company, the business that delivers independent releases to streaming services and stores. Members Adelaido 'Payo' Solís III, Alberto 'Beto' Acosta and Juan Javier Cantú took part, according to Billboard.

Cantú said the group began in McAllen, Texas, playing quinceañeras and weddings. A quinceañera is a 15th birthday celebration observed by many Latin American families. Weddings and family parties gave the young band regular work close to home. The bookings were small. The lessons stuck.

The turning point, he said, was 'No Se Va'. The song is a cover of a pop original by Colombian band Morat. Grupo Frontera's version became a viral breakout hit in 2022, spreading through short videos and streaming playlists. Cantú said it blew up and that in 2023 their lives changed completely.

The band has kept its independent status while building a company around it. This year it launched BorderTown Records in partnership with The Orchard. A label partnership of this kind covers distribution and support while the artists retain ownership of their recordings, known as master rights. It allows Grupo Frontera to release its own music and develop other acts.

The panel comes in a week when the band is also in contention for prizes. Grupo Frontera is a four-time finalist at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Finalist means the act is shortlisted on the basis of chart data for the awards year. The ceremony will broadcast live on Oct. 22 on Telemundo and Peacock from the James L. Knight Center in Downtown Miami. It will be hosted by Carmen Villalobos and Javier Poza.

Billboard Latin Music Week 2026 runs from Oct. 19 to 22. The week is organised around panels, performances and meetings for artists and industry staff. This year's 37th edition returns to the Faena Forum in Miami Beach, according to Billboard.

What makes this stand out is the order of events. The audience arrived first. The company came second. For fans following the week, it is a clear example of how a local live circuit can feed a global release plan without a traditional major label deal.
