Lower East Side Gallery Massey Klein to Close After Nine Years

Massey Klein Gallery in New York is closing its shopfront after nine years.
The Lower East Side space was run by husband-and-wife team Garrett Klein and Ryan Massey. They announced the decision in an Instagram post on Saturday, saying the fixed-gallery model was no longer sustainable for them, and that they will keep working on nomadic projects without a permanent address. The gallery sits at 124 Forsyth Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side. The 1,000-square-foot showroom cost just under US$10,000 a month in rent.
There is still one last show to see. The current exhibition, Kate McQuillen: Echo Resounds, has been extended through 20 November. The gallery website lists its full run as 10 September to 20 November 2026.
Massey Klein built its name by mixing its own programme with the art-fair circuit. A fair, in plain terms, is a large weekend market where galleries rent booths to show and sell work. The team took booths at the Armory Show and NADA in New York, Untitled in Miami, and the Dallas Art Fair.
They are not leaving that circuit. The dealers plan to take part next year in Split Level, a New York art fair, and to keep organising displays with Groupe NYC, a shared viewing and sales space.
For regular visitors, this means the Forsyth Street door will shut but the names will stay in circulation. No closing date for the building has been published beyond the end of the McQuillen show. The Instagram announcement framed the move as a change of format, not a stop.
