Tinashe's Popstar has debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, the United States album chart, on the chart dated Oct. 10. The album earned 35,500 album units, the combined measure that counts sales and streams together, in its first week, including 22,000 pure sales, meaning copies bought outright on CD, vinyl or download. It is her eighth album. The 16-track set carries Atlantic's name as its major label, and was produced with Ricky Reed, the founder of Nice Life Recording Company. Billboard

The pairing follows several years of work together. Tinashe, 33, officially joined Reed's Atlantic Records imprint in July 2023, alongside manager Simonne Solitro. Their collaboration included the 2023 project BB/Ang3l and its single 'Needs'.

Her route to that point crossed film, group pop and mixtapes. Born in Kentucky to professor parents, she came of age in Los Angeles and appeared in the 2004 film The Polar Express. She was later a member of the late-2000s girl group The Stunners, then released three mixtapes in the early 2010s before signing with RCA Records.

Her 2014 single '2 On' featuring ScHoolboy Q was certified quadruple-platinum, the award for four million units in sales and streams in the US. Reed and Tinashe have since built a steady studio partnership around short sessions and close vocal production.

Recent weeks have brought the record to festival and video audiences. Tinashe performed two songs from Popstar as a special guest during Charli xcx's headlining Austin City Limits set. The album track 'Melatonin', produced by Reed, Zach Sekoff and Nightfeelings, also has a music video featured on her official website, which advertises limited-edition Popstar CDs and vinyl editions for sale.

For listeners keeping track, this means new music and live dates in the same stretch. Her official website lists an Oct. 16 show at The Salt Shed in Chicago, Illinois at 8:00 PM, an Oct. 24 show at Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn, New York at 8:00 PM, and a Nov. 7 show at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California at 8:00 PM. What makes this stand out is the continuity. A singer who started as a child actor, moved through a girl group and independent mixtape releases, and scored an early radio hit is now placing a full-length record in the top 10 with a long-term producer. The number tells that part of the story plainly.
