Michael Douglas asked Marvel to kill off Hank Pym after his second Ant-Man film, but the studio said no. He described the refused exit during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as reported by Variety.

Douglas plays Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the linked series of Marvel superhero films. He debuted in 2015's "Ant-Man" and returned for 2018's "Ant-Man and the Wasp," 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" and 2023's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," according to Variety. His most recent outing in the role remains that 2023 film.

He had floated the idea before. Speaking on "The View" in 2024, Douglas said he had requested that Pym be killed off in "Quantumania". He even pitched the method. Pym would shrink to ant size and then explode, with special effects to carry the moment.

The tone was light. Douglas said jokingly that he would have been happy for Marvel to kill off Dr Hank Pym, as noted by The Playlist, which published its report on 19 October 2026. He keeps it simple. He joined Marvel because he had never made a green screen film, where actors perform against a blank backdrop and locations are added later, and he told his agents he wanted to try one.

The podcast chat, hosted by Josh Horowitz, was built around Douglas's memoir ONE HELLUVA RIDE, according to the episode listing on YouTube. Happy Sad Confused regularly features long conversations with actors and film-makers. In the same interview Douglas also looked back at "Wall Street," recalling how director Oliver Stone tried to push his buttons on set.

Douglas has already cooled talk of another Marvel return. He said in 2024 that he did not expect to appear in a fourth Ant-Man film. No new appearance has been announced.

For fans, this means the survival of Pym was a studio call, not the actor's choice. Douglas wanted a loud exit. Marvel preferred to keep him alive.
