BBC Three is leaving television again in spring 2027.

The youth-focused channel will close as a linear channel, meaning a channel watched live to a fixed schedule, and continue as a brand on BBC iPlayer, the BBC's streaming service, according to Deadline. It is the second time in 10 years that BBC Three has been taken off air.

For viewers, this means no channel number to find. Programmes badged as BBC Three will still be available on demand on iPlayer. Live viewing will end. On-demand viewing will not. The brand is not disappearing.

BBC Scotland will follow the same path. Its linear channel will also close in spring 2027 but it will be kept on iPlayer. Radio 4 Extra, the BBC's archive speech and comedy service, will also close as a linear network, the radio equivalent of a live scheduled channel, in spring 2027.

The closures form part of a plan to save £500 million ($666 million) over the next three years, as set out by the BBC in June and reported by Deadline. That target sits on top of an earlier savings goal worth £1.5 billion. The BBC said in June that the first phase totals £160 million, according to the BBC Media Centre.

Jobs are affected. The cuts are large. The BBC has announced 100 layoffs in its news division, saving £5.5 million. Up to 2,000 jobs are at risk across the savings strategy. The first 550 closures affect news, nations and TV and radio content, the BBC said in June, as reported by BBC News.

What makes this stand out is the repeat history. BBC Three was first moved online-only in 2016. It was restored to television in 2022. Five years later it is scheduled to leave the schedules again.

The announcement follows weeks of warning. On 25 September 2026, the BBC Director-General said some channels and radio stations 'may well' have to close, according to BBC News. Days earlier, trade press reported the BBC was preparing closure announcements, while as of 24 September no individual channel had been confirmed, according to Broadband TV News. On 2 October, staff feared BBC Three and BBC Scotland would be shut the following week, according to The Guardian. Confirmation came on 20 October 2026.
