Iga Swiatek ends 2026 season early to recharge

Iga Swiatek has shut down her 2026 season early. The former world No.1 will rest and recharge before returning in 2027.
She withdrew from the Ningbo Open with a left thigh injury, the WTA confirmed. The call came days after she needed treatment on the same leg during her Wuhan Open semi-final defeat to fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska. She played on in Wuhan. Then she stopped.
Swiatek called 2026 "one of the most challenging" seasons of her career, according to BBC Sport. The numbers explain why. She finished 42-16, slipped to ninth in the world rankings during the year, and will miss the WTA Finals, the eight-player finale for the season's best performers. It is the first time she has failed to qualify since 2019.
She also ended a year without a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2021. Her most recent major triumph came at Wimbledon the previous year. Her only title of 2026 arrived at the Canadian Open in August, a WTA 1000 event, the tier just below the four Slams, where she beat world No.1 Elena Rybakina on the way to the trophy in Toronto.
There were flashes of the old authority. In Wuhan she logged her 150th WTA 1000 match win, 6-1, 6-4 over American Ashlyn Krueger to reach the quarter-finals, the WTA reported. Krueger entered as a lucky loser, a qualifier who loses but still gets a main-draw place when another player pulls out. Swiatek then lost to Chwalinska in the last four.
Only a week earlier, on 13 October, she was still chasing a positive finish with her Finals place hanging in the balance. Ningbo was meant to be her last push for points in the Race, the year-long table that decides who qualifies for that eight-woman field. Rybakina arrived there as defending champion. Marta Kostyuk was also hunting points.
Off court brought change too. Swiatek split from coach Wim Fissette in March. She then appointed Spaniard Francisco Roig, a former coach of Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu.
What makes this stand out is the pause. Swiatek said her body had been sending increasing signs that it was time to stop. For fans, this means no sprint to the finish. Just a full stop, and a longer runway to 2027.
