Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva challenged presidential candidate Senator Flavio Bolsonaro on October 20, 2026, to release personal records before the second-round election.

Speaking at a campaign event in Maranhao state, Lula said he would release his bank, tax and telephone records, along with those of his family, if Flavio Bolsonaro agreed to do the same, according to Al Jazeera.

Lula has submitted a document to Brazil's electoral court saying he would authorize the release of his bank, tax and telephone records. The offer was conditional. Lula said secrecy would be lifted for himself and family members only if Flavio Bolsonaro did the same for himself, his wife Fernanda, and others.

A day earlier, on October 19, Lula said he would send his banking and telephone records and those of his children to TSE president Nunes Marques and called on Flavio Bolsonaro to do the same.

Flavio Bolsonaro is the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The former president was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in a coup plot after Lula defeated him in 2022.

Separately, Meta told Brazil's Supreme Court on October 20 that it had taken steps to ensure equal treatment for both presidential candidates. The company said any automated restrictions on advertising accounts from either campaign would be reviewed within two hours through the second-round vote on Sunday.

Flavio Bolsonaro also campaigned on October 20 with an appeal to Brazil's events sector. He pledged to restore tax breaks, according to Reuters.
